Taping for Patellar Ligament Desmopathy in Dogs

Patellar ligament desmopathy is a thickening of the patellar tendon that can be traumatic or non-traumatic in origin. The non-traumatic form is most often seen in dogs with a history of corrective osteotomy surgery for cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD), such as TPLO, and can occur in up to 80% of these cases. It is usually diagnosed through palpation (a thickened, painful tendon), ultrasonography, radiography or MRI.

Step-by-step application

  1. Locate the patellar tendon by palpation. It runs from the base of the kneecap to the tibial tuberosity, just below the knee joint, and will feel thickened and may be painful to the touch.

Position of the tape over the patellar tendon, shown on a skeleton
  2. Measure and cut a single strip of tape long enough to cover the tendon with a small margin on either side.

Measuring the tape against the dog's leg before application
  3. Apply the tape directly over the patellar tendon with light to medium stretch. This can help relieve pain associated with the thickened, inflamed tendon.

Important precautions

  • This application manages pain; it does not resolve the underlying thickening of the tendon. Ongoing monitoring by a veterinarian is recommended, especially after TPLO or similar surgery.
  • Check the skin is clean, dry and free of irritation before applying tape.
  • If pain or swelling increases rather than improves, seek veterinary advice promptly.
