Taping for Biceps Brachii Tendinopathy in Dogs

Biceps brachii tendinopathy involves inflammation or degeneration of the tendon that runs from the shoulder, over the front of the upper arm, down towards the radius and ulna. It can cause forelimb lameness, particularly noticeable during extension of the shoulder or flexion of the elbow.

Step-by-step application

  1. Cut a “Y” shape, sized to run from the point of the shoulder down to just below the elbow.

Y-shaped tape positioned along the biceps brachii, shown on a skeleton
  2. Anchor the base of the “Y” at the shoulder and apply the tail proximal to distal, following the line of the biceps brachii tendon down the front of the upper arm.

Y-shaped tape applied along the biceps brachii tendon
  3. Split the two tails of the “Y” at the elbow, directing one tail towards the radius and the other towards the ulna.

Important precautions

  • Have persistent forelimb lameness assessed by a veterinarian before taping, to rule out other causes such as shoulder instability or elbow disease.
  • Check the skin is clean, dry and free of irritation before applying tape.
