The various kinesiology tape applications on this page can be effective for lower back pain. These strapping applications can be used to lower the tone in fascia.

Lower back pain

The most common complaint for which clients visit a therapist is back pain. Often these complaints are related to the lower back. Back pain can also be accompanied by radiation to the buttock or thigh. If the pain spreads further down the posterior aspect of the thigh, there is a high chance that it is nerve pain referred by a disk bulge or herniated disk. In approximately 90% of clients with low back pain, it is unclear what the cause of the complaints is. The lumbar spine is under constant strain, causing the fascial structures to tighten with pain as a result.

The following CureTape® kinesiology tape applications can be effective for lower back pain. These various strapping applications can be used to lower the tone in fascia.

Relaxing kinesiology tape for lower back pain

The dorsal trunk muscles (M. quadratus lumborum) often cause lower back pain due to increased tension.

We recommend the kinesiology taping/strapping application below to reduce tension, thereby stimulating natural posture and movement, which in turn speeds up the recovery process.

Taping application

  1. Cut two 30cm strips of CureTape
  2. Lay the base of the tape strip in the neutral position, laterally to the SIPS.
  3. Have the client bend forwards (flexion)
  4. Place the strips with 10 to 15 percent elongation and allow the client to return to a neutral position and fix the anchors.
  5. Have the client bend over again and rub the tape to warm up the adhesive and allow optimum adhesion.

Taping/strapping for general Lower Back Pain

When the kinesiology tape is applied as the instruction video below indicates, natural motion is stimulated, which is important for the recovery process.

Taping application:

  1. Cut 3 three horizontal I-strips, in 3 different lengths
  2. Place the distal strip (the smallest) first
  3. Then build up towards the proximal
  4. The tape is applied with stretch

Kinesiology taping for extension complaints of the lower back

For extension complaints of the lower back, taping of the erector spinae and lumbar extensors is recommended. When the tape is applied as indicated below, the natural movement is stimulated, which is important for the recovery process.

Strapping application:

    1. Cut a Y-tape or use two I-strips of approximately 25 cm
    2. Place the base of the tape on the sacrum in a neutral position, allowing the client to lean forward as far as possible
    3. The kinesiology tape is applied next to the spine with 10 to 15% stretch
    4. Rub the tape warm for optimum adhesion and allow the client to return to the neutral position
